Whether you’re a digital marketing rookie, or a traditional marketer looking to boost your digital knowledge, these handy tips will point you in the right direction.
Tip 1: Learn, learn and learn!
Marketing’s a dynamic and exciting industry. That’s why you love it, right? But that means it’s constantly changing. So in order to keep up with your colleagues, let alone get to the top of your beloved profession, you’ve got to be soaking up knowledge like a thirsty sponge. Here’s how…
– Blogs and social media: They’re a great source of industry knowledge – that’s why you’re reading one! Ask your co-workers what blogs they read and who they follow on social. You’ll get a good feel for what’s going on in the ever-changing world of digital marketing and it’ll help you get your head around the basics.
– Courses and certificates: There are loads of awesome courses and certificates you can do to bring your digital marketing skills up to speed – many of which you can do online, in your own time. Some, like IQ’s Digital Marketing Certificate, are created by industry professionals, and are highly regarded by marketing big-wigs.
– Industry Events: Get along to as many of these as you can. You’ll learn from people who live and breathe digital marketing, as well as meeting people just like you who want to learn all there is to know about digital marketing.
Tip 2: Start out as a jack-of-all-trades, then become a master of one
Keeping your focus fairly broad will allow you to get a better overall understanding of a digital marketing mix. It’ll also give you a chance to find out what you’re good at, then allow you to grow in that area. Will you be a gun social media manager? A content king? An analytics expert? That’s up to you, but eventually you’ll have to specialise.
Tip 3: Trial and error
No matter how long you’ve been in the digital marketing game, there’s still no way of guaranteeing a strategy or tactic will work. That’s where data really helps, but only if you know how to use it.
Each time you try a new strategy, a new piece of tech, or a new social channel, see how the results stack up compared to your desired objectives. If it’s a flop, learn from it. Looking at your outcomes, good or bad, with an analytical eye, is one of the fundamental skills you’ll need to be a great digital marketer.
